Re: Sherlock and Elementary

Never watched Sherlock so I can't comment on that, but regarding Elementary:

I don't see it as having anything to do with ACD canon. The way I think of it, it's clearly inspired by Sherlock Holmes but not directly adapting it, much in the same way that Frozen was inspired by The Snow Queen, but doesn't have much in common with it aside from the basic premise of "Queen with ice powers causes trouble". I understand that this sort of "adaption" is not everyone's cup of tea, but I think that in some cases a loose interpretation of the source material gives the writers more room to be creative and show new perspectives on old tropes as opposed to rehashing what's already been done over and over and over.

(Please note that I'm not comparing Elementary to Frozen in terms of writing, since obviously a Disney movie and a police procedural show are going to be like apples and oranges. It's just a good example of what I'm talking about.)

This. Elementary is not an adaptation. It's a procedural with a gimmick, and its gimmick is that our heroes are Holmes and Watson in NYC in the present day.

And not very close to ACD's Holmes and Watson either. The name gimmick is just a way to grab attention. Sherlock and Joan are really new characters that just barely represent what Sherlock and John would be in the altered reality.

+1 for the inspired/adapted distinction.
