Re: Film Noir recs

Thank you for an excuse to gush about Noir. It's one of my favorite older movie genres.

I've seen a few hidden gems in my time. See if you can track down:

*Gun Crazy; One of the most badass femme fatales I've ever seen. Her first appearance is amazing.

*The Big Heat: Awesome director, good acting, unexpected plot twists.

*The Man Who Cheated Himself: A good hook and a fantastic final setpiece.

*Quicksand: A nice take on the "good man goes bad" plot.

*Born to Kill: Good on it's own, but fantastic when you listen to the audio commentary.

*Whistle Stop: Not your average Femme Fatale.

*D.O.A.: Worth it just for the opening lines, but the rest of the story is good too.

*Night Editor: A slightly different take on a Noir hero.

*Mildred Pierce: If you can put up with the bratty daughter, it's got a great story.

*Suddenly: Frank Sinatra plays the villain, and does it well.

*Act of Violence: Surprisingly creepy.

*Call Northside 777: Goes completely against the modern cliches, which is what makes it fascinating.

*Marked Woman: Just phenomenal, and stars powerhouses Bette Davis and Humphrey Bogart.

*The Amazing Dr. Clitterhouse: Crime film/comedy, but it works.

*Side Street: Has its fair share of surprises.

*Mystery Street: Tackles some pretty heavy subject material, while also being the first movie to really address the idea of forensics.

*The Set-up: The only noir ever based on a poem. About boxing, no less.

*Women's Prison: Nowhere near as exploitative as it sounds. It's actually a pretty good drama.

And of course, I second Double Indemnity and The Maltese Falcon. Hope you can find something in there!

omg someone else knows The Amazing Dr. Clitterhouse! For more Bogart, I'll add The Two Mrs. Carrolls. And my favorite of his collaborations with Lauren Bacall is Dark Passage, though of course I love The Big Sleep too.

Notorious is a favorite Hitchcock film of mine that I never hear as much about. Laura is fun too. Let's see, there's also The Stranger; Detour; Murder, My Sweet; Sorry, Wrong Number; This Gun for Hire; The Big Clock; and The Letter.

the remake of Mildred Pierce is better than the original IMHO. Joan Crawford's acting is really too over the top in the original version, even for her.
