Re: Things that really annoy you right now

The book I'm reading right now is sort of pissing me off.

It's about a teenage girl who was murdered in a brutal, horrific way, and the main male detective has said about half a dozen times so far that he wonders "what she did" to make someone do that to her, because of course it's her fault.

The main female detective said that she cares about the victim because she (the detective) is a woman and has a vagina. Because apparently men and/or people without vaginas don't care about murder victims?

And people keep referring to "sexual preference" and it being a "choice". One character referred to bisexuality as "creepy", one didn't believe it existed, and another said people need to "make a choice". A drawing of him having a threesome with two guys was used against a bully because of course being gay is the worst possible thing someone could be accused of. The main male character accuses guys of being "gay" for dressing a certain way or being close to their mom. The main woman is offended that someone would think she'd be okay with her son drawing pictures of dudes having sex.

I feel like I'm being an uptight SJW for being bothered by these things but it's just rubbing me the wrong way.

Augh a lot of these would piss me off. Although the first one, because I've watched a lot of crime shows , wouldn't bother me too much because I've seen a hundred shows where someone is killed brutally and gets the reaction of "geeez who did they piss off". I don't think it's a statement that the victim is at fault, but more "something probably happened to get this kind of reaction out of someone".

Of course, it all depends on how it's worded and context , so I may be wrong.

But the other stuff would piss me off if it's not called out on. Especially the "bisexuality is creepy" bit. Just wtf? How is being attracted to guys AND girls even remotely creepy?

That was exactly my thought at first and I didn't think much of it but then when the same thing was repeated several more times it started bothering me. And "I wonder who she pissed off" comes off differently to me than "what did she do to make someone do this to her" but maybe I'm just reading too much into it.

But yeah, the "bisexuality is creepy" thing was weird. I thought at first when it was just the one main guy saying that kind of crap, that it was just his character. He's described as an "old school" cop so it's not too surprising he'd feel that way. But then other supposedly more open-minded characters started saying similarly ignorant things so it's obviously the author's views rather than the characters'.

wtf, i don't think being bothered by that is being "an uptight SJW"

it's just a normal reaction to a creepy book by an author who clearly has some creepy views on things

Thanks. In the past when I've been bothered by similar things in media and shared those thoughts with people I've been called an SJW and told to chill out, so I'm glad not everyone feels that way.

nayrt

don't worry about it, people here are uptight about sjws for a variety of reasons (a bunch of actual sjws pre-dreamwidth jump and tumblr having a ton are the biggest) and sometimes forget to logic before they cry sjw

unless you're legit nuts, like the 'i want to murder karen straughan' anon, concern about social justice is a good thing and you are probably fine

Yeah, that's what I wanna know. So, you know, I can avoid it.

The 9th Girl by Tami Hoag. I've read some of her books in the past and enjoyed them and don't really remember noticing this kind of stuff in the others (at the time), but in retrospect I kind of remember some questionable stuff in one of her earlier books where the murder victim was a gay guy.

It's possible it may end up that all this stuff has a purpose but I'm starting to think it's just the author's views. There's been some other stuff (a female character assuming all women will have kids, and someone commenting on how "all married couples" behave in certain ways) that makes her seem very old-fashioned and conservative (and I want to say Republican-ish, but I'm not sure that's fair) so I suppose it's not too surprising. It is disappointing, though.

Well, that's a shame. Thanks for the heads up, anon.

That's the problem with anti-SJW sentiment. It treats anyone who isn't comfortable with all levels of bigotry as some teenage moron who needs to grow up. Those are all valid issues that would bother me too, not the least because it's poor writing.

At first it was just the one male cop, who is described as "old school", making sexist and homophobic comments, and I thought it made sense for his character, but then when everyone else started saying similar things, it started bothering me. At this point it's obvious that the author feels this way, because it's the exact same opinion, down to the phrasing, for every character.

The poor writing bothers me, too. The main male character is just an all around ass, and the main female character is pissing me off, too, because she's always got to be right.

I do find it amusing, though, that a character who is constantly being called amazing and wonderful and has literally been described as "perfect" is named Mary Sue. Ha.

Yeah, it happens. Authors can be completely unaware of their bigoted attitudes because to them, well, that's their "normal". Or it could be bad writing in the sense that it's full of clumsy, tired cliches, including gender stereotypes.
