Re: Book club discussion post for Dragon Princess!

The ending was...weird to me. It really kinda sucked for Frank. His body was gone and there wasn't any other place he could go, and he clearly wasn't really ok with being in a female body. His marriage to Lucille was a nice thing to do for her, but he got a super raw deal. I guess it was good that he got to keep his only real friend nearby, but he now has to live in a totally unfamiliar place and will probably also go crazy from sheer boredom. He might even still be seen as a political figurehead (though I suppose the marriage precludes him from being used as a bargaining chip from now on).

It did work out pretty nicely from Lucille's point of view. And I must say, if I were her, I'd almost certainly make the same choice. If I grew up as a woman with little entertainment, no political power, no freedom, and the likelihood of being forced into an arranged marriage with a man who wasn't being vetted by anything other than noble blood and/or brute strength, I'd rather be a dragon, too. Plus I've always thought it would be really cool to be a dragon anyway.

I'm wondering how the Lendowyn family line will continue since Alfred didn't have any more kids and Lucille and Frank definitely can't procreate, now. Would it simply pass onto some distant relative? (Likely, I suppose.) Would lady!Frank have to take a consort to produce an heir, since he's the one now in possession of royal blood, both physically and legally? (That sounds potentially traumatic and I'd totally read about it.) And for that matter, is he now heir to the throne? That seems especially daunting since he's a thief with basically no political background. Not only does it seem like he wouldn't make a very astute queen (king? I guess legally it'd be queen...) but I don't think he'd enjoy it very much, either. Lucille would do a better job, so maybe she'll just do a lot of the work for him...but would people really want to wait on a dragon in a royal court? IDK.

I shipped Frank and Lucille and was thinking if they did get their bodies back that they'd have a happy ending since they actually had a good dynamic and I was happy for Lucille that she'd be able to marry someone she actually liked. But now...I guess that can't happen. Even if they could "fall in love" in this state they basically couldn't have any kind of physical relationship.

I am reminded, though, of another question:

What did you think of Nâtlac's gift to Frank?

Do you think it's something he ought to risk using? What do you think it will do? Turn him into a male human with a body designed by Nâtlac? Maybe a male dragon? Or, like, a male fly, as a cruel joke? Transform Lucille's body into a male counterpart? What could the consequences be? Do you think it's some diabolical trick (I mean, it probably is) and what could Nâtlac possibly gain from it?

Back to the shipping, though - as a more realistic option at least for Frank (Lucille, for the time being, doesn't really seem to care about finding a partner, but I wonder if she'd mind Frank doing anything on the side...) I'd love to see him hook up with that lady who helped him out with the clothes at Queen Fiona's jousting party. In general, since he's stuck as a woman, it might be in Frank's best interests to try to get used to the idea of being a lesbian. Well, a male lesbian? At least politically speaking. I guess technically speaking he's a trans guy. But I don't think this world has much of a concept of that. But uh.

Related: what did you think of the dynamics of attraction with body-swapping and gender?

I thought it was a bit weird that Frank was still 100% attracted to women in his new body, since sexual attraction has so much to do with physical hormones. I'd have thought that at the very least we'd see some confusion in terms of physical attraction.

Though now that I think about it it's entirely possible that Lucille was actually a lesbian before the transformation. But that didn't seem to be the author's intent behind writing it that way.

I have to think that if I were randomly swapped into another body, I'd still be emotionally attracted to the same people but physically it might be a mix since physical attraction is at least for me a result of both hormonal and emotional responses to people. If I (a straight woman) were suddenly zapped into a straight man's body...it seems it would be messy. And now I really want to read fiction that deals with that issue. Recs, anyone? Fan or original fiction?

Would it simply pass onto some distant relative?

If that were the case, I can see it being messy. I really think some sort of conflict in the offing; ambitious nobles tend to see opportunity in situations like this.

Not only does it seem like he wouldn't make a very astute queen (king? I guess legally it'd be queen...) but I don't think he'd enjoy it very much, either.

I don't think he'd do all that badly. He's a smart guy; he's just never thought to put his smarts to "legitimate" pursuits. Given some guidance (and who better to give him that guidance than Lucille), and I think he could be a very astute ruler.

But I agree that it isn't likely he'd enjoy it much. IIRC, he said something to that effect during one of his early conversations with Lucille-as-dragon.

What do you think it will do?

This is a tough one, because it's obviously a set-up, and I'd imagine that, given Nâtlac's proclivities, it's got to do something that puts Frank's soul in position to be taken (or put someone else's soul in position to be taken).

It's something I'm going to have to think more about.

I'd love to see him hook up with that lady who helped him out with the clothes at Queen Fiona's jousting party.

Well, gosh, I guess I'm not alone! :D

I thought it was a bit weird that Frank was still 100% attracted to women in his new body, since sexual attraction has so much to do with physical hormones.

I think this depends on how the body is treated in the world. If the body is just a shell invested with a soul, then gender identity and orientation are intrinsic and have little or nothing to do with biology. I think that might be the model that this book was going for.

That said, I think it would be interesting to explore body-swap from a perspective that meshes the biological with the metaphysical and deals with what you describe.
