That's because people are paranoid because of X1999 and Legal Drug and the like. Seriously, every time HOLiC goes on an extended break people start flipping out thinking it's gonna end up like X when really CLAMP just needed time to get Tsubasa caught up with HOLiC.

I don't get why, though. HOLiC is structured so that the characters can go do other things while Tsubasa catches up. Why don't they do that?

Most of the long breaks, though, looking back on it happened when something major was going to happen in HOLiC that was a spoiler for TRC, or something about the connection between the two was going to be brought up. Like I'm thinking of the one hiatus HOLiC went on, I think towards the end of Infinity where it was revealed in HOLiC where HOLiC was like... a chapter away from Sakura showing up and she hadn't been stabbed yet in TRC? I don't really remember the specifics but most of the major hiatuses HOLiC has taken has been for TRC to catch up because of the parallels. Especially in the more recent chapters because the two are coming closer together as they near their end.

Okay, that makes a little more sense.

Do you think they'll merge into one series by the end, or stay as two separate ones?

I don't see how they could fully merge, but I do suspect the two will have one final arc that ties both of them together but, like the rest of the series, will be shown from the two different sides. I'm pretty sure CLAMP said some time earlier this year that the end of HOLiC will be directly related to how TRC ends? Or something like that.

Maybe it means that they're both going to end soon. I mean, HOLiC doesn't have much more it can do at this point. I think this whole dream versus reality thing could be the last arc.

Oh, I have little doubt that they'll end either in late 2008 or early 2009. There's still a lot to be revealed, back story wise, but current plotwise? There's really not much less as far as I can see.
