Reasonable. On the other hand, that's a particular stereotype that I find especially demeaning to females when done poorly - over-the-top violence from girls is counted as comic relief, and that gives the message that girls aren't capable of doing any real damage. That's probably what annoys me more than any individual character who follows it. I'm not opposed to characters who are like that if they're written well, but the idea that girls who hit people are funny and not dangerous really bugs me.

Most of the over-the-top violence in those shows isn't supposed to be taken seriously anyway. Even if a male character did it at the same moment a female one did, it still wouldn't be taken seriously. It's not supposed to be taken as a sign that girls can't do "any real damage," it's supposed to be comical. Elmer Fudd shooting at Bugs Bunny and not doing any real damage doesn't mean guns are harmless; it's a comic moment. Ranma and Ryoga from Ranma 1/2 fight all the time; it's never supposed to be taken seriously. I know that some of the girls up there are from "serious" series, but really, I'm going to have to agree to disagree with you on that point. Of course the violence isn't taken seriously. It's not supposed to be,

In a series like Ranma, where the guy characters do it as well, I don't mind nearly so much. And you do have a good point, but...it still gets to me. Then again, violent overreaction in just about any character annoys me, so maybe it's less to do with the stereotype than I thought.

Uh, sorry for butting in here, but I kind of wanted to give a different take on the issue than [livejournal.com profile] cloakand_danger. I feel--and this is speaking as someone who's generally fond of the type--that when done wrong, tsundere characters can kind of give off an "lol all women are crazy violent bitches" feel. Or conversely (on the "dere" side of things) "Oh, she just needed to find a man all along, and now she's nice and sweet and (often) ~feminine~". And yeah, I feel that that stereotype enforces the idea that it's okay to treat women's ideas, or women's feelings with anything less than equal respect.

Just my two cents.

I can see the issue, and this is the angle I hear voiced more often, but I still have to disagree. Most of the "psycho" moments are still intended to be comical, not serious, and several of those characters don't reform into perfect sweet -- to use another term brought up here before -- yamato nadeshiko. I'll point at Haruhi, since she's the one I readily know up there. She's still pretty crazy and tsundere throughout the whole series, but she does show a softer side without being overwhelmingly sweet and sugary, and it's actually not entirely because of Kyon, even if she does fall for him pretty early in the series chronologically.

In the end, however, it's still a fictional character, and if people are really seriously letting it affect their real-life opinions and perceptions of something, there is something wrong -- not with the character, but with the person. Fiction =/= reality, isn't that the siren call of fandom?

I actually agree with you for the most part--that's why I said "when done wrong". It's not the "tsundere" archetype itself I find harmful; it's the stereotypes (the ones I stated above) that sometimes result from it. And as you mentioned, not all tsunderes come off that way.

But I think you're underestimating the power of the media--if you grow up watching/reading/playing material that all sends the message that "all women are like this, you will probably start believing it. Popular perception is funny like that. Not to mention that every work has a creator--that character that panders to sexist stereotypes was thought up by someone.

"Oh, she just needed to find a man all along, and now she's nice and sweet and (often) ~feminine~".

UGH, I HATE THIS AND I WANT IT TO DIE.

Apologies for the caps, but... seriously. Especially if the character is one who is stubborn and pigheaded, they aren't just going to bend to a boy's whim.
