I didn't think Generic High Fantasy features a lot of black people. It's always seemed very lily white to me.

Also, holy cow that secret. Draw me like one of your French girls indeed.

Yeah, 'more black people, less rape' is the opposite of the generic high fantasy I'm used to.

Yeah, pretty much. Generic High Fantasy tends to be White Medieval Europe but with Magic.

Poorly researched white medieval Europe at that.

Weelllllll there are some that do it better than others, but...yeah, for the most part that's a fair point.

Ha, I thought this was a Titanic secret at first and was confused by the gory background!

(Anonymous) 2014-12-05 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, because generic fantasy has tons of black people in it. I figure this is one of those situations where not so closeted racists want to complain about why a thing is "worse" now, but without saying "because having more black people ruins it".

OP

(Anonymous) 2014-12-06 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
He claimed to be black. He said that Jade Empire takes place in an Asian-style setting and is full of Asian people, so pseudo-Europe should be full of white people. He kept saying that there was no in-universe way that so many black people could have moved into the region in so short a time since the heavily white first game, so it must have been Bioware wanting to bring in more of a black audience, and he thought it was deeply patronizing that they thought he'd want more black people at the expense of setting consistency. (He also said he'd read the arguments on Tumblr that there were nonwhite people in Europe, and they were heavily overstated, so don't bother bringing them up.)

I can't wait to see how much of a nut he busts if there are more black people in the next Star Wars . . .

Fandom is never happy, that's just how shit works. I'm sure some people have valid criticisms of Inquisition (I know I do), but these? Not seeing how they're problems.

And I love you for using this screenshot. This is easily one of my favorite moments in a Dragon Age game. (Also, those tattoos.)

wait. that's a screenshot? I thought that was a photo manip.

The part with The Iron Bull is a screenshot but obviously the Titanic pic on Cullen's clipboard is shopped.

It's a great scene though and had me covering my mouth to stifle my laughter since it was so late at night when it occurred in my game.

I haven't done an iron bull romance yet, but I think I might have to dedicate part of a playthrough to this now.

Definitely worth it for the scene in question. I've only seen it on Youtube but it is amazing!

Your question has already been answered but yes, the Iron Bull (with Cullen) part is real, and it is beautiful. Bull's romance surprised me in a lot of (good) ways! (It's filled with hilarious/oddly sweet moments.) I mean, parts of it (like this) are ridiculous, but in the best possible way.

As reasons to play Dragon Age 3 go, this is a good one.

There really wasn't that much rape to take out though. The only instance I can think of is the City Elf Origin.

Anyway, they are similar enough that I really can't imagine someone who hated Origins liking Inqusition.

I felt the same. There were some allusions at rape, where it was implied if you wanted to read into it, but it was rarely stated outright.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-06 11:05 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that was the only time rape was clear (but it was never shown). Then, like, Fenris's (and possibly Isabela's?) backstories, which are also more subtle and never outright discussed, and Anders mentions that some mages in the Circle get raped by Templars. I also felt like there could have been something sexual about what the darkspawn do to make Broodmothers. The only other thing I can think of is that Oghren makes a rape joke to Anders in Awakening. But yeah, City Elf Origin is the only time that I recall it being a part of the plot and not just dialogue/backstory/not outright stated.

On the subject of Broodmothers, Hespith's poem/chant is pretty clear that it is gang-rape.

But I agree with you that it's referred to a lot, in a past-tense way, but the City Elf Origin is the most up-front present tense, with implications of Ser Alrik raping mages he's tranquilized as a second.

Okay, haven't played it yet. But if it's true what I saw of the advertising, and they added more regions - wouldn't it make sense to have more variety in skintones? Antivans were a bit more tan to begin with.

As for the rape - that was always sort of sanitized in the first place. Like, in some cases you could read rape into it, but it wasn't outright stated. Just because it's not in this installation, doesn't mean it doesn't exist in the world - but surely you don't have to repeat in every version?

It's mostly new regions, but we also revisit Ferelden, which admittedly did seem more white in the first game than it does is now. I have zero problems with it because there's always been brown Fereldens, there's just a few more now, but yeah.

Ferelden could have had immigrants since the first game, including dark-skinned immigrants.

Ironbull is hilarious! I just watched all the romance cutscenes on youtube.
