The character designs don't bother me. I'd give it a shot if it wasn't so damn long with no end in sight.

Yeah, this is exactly the reason I stopped following One Piece a few years ago.

I went to try to read it and the main character's eyes were too offputting for it to be enjoyable.

That's how it was for me when I tried watching the anime. The style is just way too offputting for me. :/
