Re: Rec thread: tv shows
Brooklyn Nine-Nine: Comedy, cop show, lot of great characters, awesome storylines.
The Musketeers (BBC) - Pretty much what it says on the tin
Shameless (US) - The original is quite good too, but I think it is the only show I prefer the remake over the original for: Not so feel-good-comedy about a family struggling to get by, but it isn't depressing, the father is an alcoholic, the mother ran away so the eldest sister takes care of her younger siblings. Which is an awful explanation. Look it up, it is my all time favourite show (then again it is pretty much an Americanized, prettified version of how I grew up)
Ripper Street - Cop show set in the times of Jack the Ripper, but not so much about The Ripper, as about the police station that handled that case. Two "detectives" and their american doctor solves crime and sometimes personal issues.
Lewis - British crime, good quality, great characters
Death in Paradise - Stereotypical English detective gets put on a fictional half French, half British tropical island, because the previous detective died, he hates sun. the tropics and the French. Ends up having to stay, gets adopted by a lizard and 3 local cops and solves crime.
And to the cancelled shows:
Breakout Kings: Sadly only one season, but a group of prisoners gets recruited to find prisoners who escape in exchange of shortening their sentences.
Casanova (BBC - version), with David Tennant, anyway what it says on the tin
Combat Hospital: I tend to describe it as modern MASH with a female lead, but it is less of a comedy more of a drama.
Endgame: Chess genius stuck in a hotel solves crime
Hotel Babylon - Follows the employees of the fictional hotel, it is part comedy, part drama and full awesome (at least the first seasons)
Hustle - a group of people hustle rich people out of their money, but as their slogan says: You can't steal from an honest man
Leverage - The American version of Hustle, except not (they are criminals gone "good" their slogan is: We take over where the law stops" so they steal from bad corporation giving it back to those the big corp have stolen from). Both are worth a watch for different reasons. I prefer the characters in Leverage, but the schemes in Hustle, tho both are good in both shows.
The Forgotten - One season: a group of people try to find the identity of dead victims before they get buried without a name.
The Unusuals - A more comedic version of Brooklyn Nine - Nine
Three Rivers - One season: You follow the lives of 3 doctors working in a transplant hospital and their patients.
Panel shows:
Qi - stands for Quite Interesting, Stephen Fry and Alan Davies + 3 guests, where comedy meets learning, and you will learn a lot of random facts and have fun while doing it.
8 out of 10 cats - Last weeks most talked about news (in the UK) with comedy
Would I lie to you - two teams, 3 people on each, one at the time read out a card they have never seen before with a fact about their lives, which is either true or a lie and they have to convince the other team it is true.
Never mind the Buzzcocks - Music, celebrities and competition, what could go wrong with that combo?
And that was all the shows I could find in my folders and DVD shelf that aren't the ones that get recommended all the time. Also that was a lot of crime shows, I don't know what that says about me?
also 10 points if you can guess what I am studying...
