(Maybe I'm being selfish, though. It must be a let-down to those who specifically want ship fic for Yuletide.)

Also, IMO it would make for a fantastic exercise in fandom creativity and open-mindedness to oblige someone to write for a ship they disliked. ;)

(Anonymous) 2014-12-06 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)Oh...really? I'm a big gen fan and quite often prefer gen to anything shippy, but I don't really like the sound of that practice. What if someone really wants a shippy fic, especially for a rare/unusual/controversial ship?
The way Yuletide works, you can request any ship involving nominated characters you want, but your author doesn't actually have to write that ship; they just have to include all of your requested characters as main characters in their fic. This makes matching a lot easier, though it does mean that some recipients end up disappointed on Christmas Day.
So some participants will provide a gen out in their requests in case their writer can't write their pairing for whatever reason, figuring that at least then they'll have a better shot at getting a gen fic that's tailored to their preferences. And other participants will only request the exact ship they want, but in the knowledge that Optional Details Are Optional and their writer might write them gen anyway.

ime, this is what the overwhelming majority of Yuletide writers do. But sometimes they really can't manage it (especially if the ship is triggery and/or illegal in their location, as can be the case with underage or incestuous ships). And on very rare occasion, they're just assholes who want to write what they want to write, and don't care about their recipients at all.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-06 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)That, in a way, was my motivation for Yuletide back when I used to participate.
As much as I'd see it as a gift for someone, it'd also be a writing challenge for myself. So I'd offer things that, while I loved, I didn't generally write for with the understanding that whatever my recipient asked for, I'd crank out the best thing I could even if they weren't characters or ships I had personally.
In fact, I think in four or five years of doing Yuletide, I only wrote a ship that was my own once, and that was for a pinch hit.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-07 12:41 am (UTC)(link)Exactly. That's the advice I've been given.
Not sure where the OP is getting their information. Yuletide is pretty chill.
