I don't want even platonic relations, I want gen.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-06 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
SA: yeah, that's what I meant -- platonic as in gen/friendship bonds between characters, rather than shippy. Sorry for being unclear!

DA

You weren't unclear; the anon who responded to you either 1) doesn't know what "platonic" means, or 2) has a really weird definition of gen that doesn't follow common fandom practice at all.

I'm going with 1).

Unless the characters don't interact with each other beyond a surface level, they're going to have platonic relationships, though. That's what friendship is.

This. No idea what the OP is on about.

Maybe they meant fic that's a solo character study, or just about the enmity between a hero and a villain, or worldbuilding, or parent/child dynamics, or something like that, without platonic friendships?

Fair enough. There's all types of genfic, as you've pointed out.

Surface is good. People go out, have an adventure, have no need to suddenly talk about how much they need a hug. The closest they get to emotional discourse during the adventure is a vague concern they may have left the kitchen light on, or a pint of milk out of the milk, the adventure ends and so does the story. We never find out if they need to buy another pint of milk, much less if they have massive wangst and need that cuddle.

...dude, it really is not an either/or situation. People can go out, talk about important things, have an adventure together about important stuff without wangst, and have emotionally satisfying connections through doing important stuff together and having fun conversations about the plot with each other, without sitting down and talking about their milk or need for a hug. Also, it is possible to show instead of tell when it comes to a story that involves friendship.

Unless you think all emotions are icky and fanfic should be about nondescript ciphers blasting bad guys all fic long. In which case IDK why you're reading fanfic when you should be watching one of the new action movies that are always in theaters. Oh wait, even those have emotional discourse. Due to being about human beings. Ewwwww. Stick to '90s first person shooters, then?
