Well, I don't think there's anything wrong with requesting gen. If you're worried people will misinterpret or make assumptions about your motives for wanting gen, maybe put a well-worded explanation of why you want it? (don't know the rules for this particular fic exchange).

i.e., don't say "I don't want anything shippy because [insert whiny complaint about shippy fic]", say something positive like "I only want gen because I'm interested in non-romantic aspects of blah blah blah" or something like that.
