Most and least practical outfits
And when was the last time you were positively surprised by the thought put into a character's outfit?
Inspired by watching Mockingjay today. Katniss' fishtail braid is pretty durable (plus she's only wearing it hours at a time and not days like in the games) and her outfit does seem like it might actually protect her vital organs.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-06 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)I'm willing to cut more slack for outfits that just go with pure rule of cool, yes it is unrealistic, but declaring rule of cool lets you knowingly throw realism to the wind. Declaring that you are going to make the character's outfit realistic, then actually ignoring realism to go with something that isn't realistic but is... I'm trying to avoid saying "politically correct" because that makes me sound like I'm a gamergating, sex-perving, basement-dweller, and I'm not. I just object to lauding Batgirl's new jacket as more realistic than the lycra when it is still as much rule of cool as the lycra was, just in the "strong female character"-esque direction.
Look, you want to have Babs wear
not a wheelchaira "tough, fiesty girl" type of outfit then that is fine. Totally cool with it. However, don't try and sell me the idea that a fitted biker jacket is a practical choice for an acrobat-hero. That won't wash. She'll do a move that raises her arms above the shoulder line and the villain of the week will have a good idea on whether she has a pierced belly button.Re: Most and least practical outfits

Re: Most and least practical outfits
Although it *did* very much annoy me in the second Iron Man when Black Widow *took her hair down* to go fight (yay for sexy, curly hair) rather than leave it up in the super-practical style she had when she was assisting Pepper.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-06 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)Prime Suspect, the Helen Mirren show, used to send SOCOs into crime scenes wearing plastic suits and bonnets to avoid contamination. I always liked that.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-07 12:21 am (UTC)(link)The ME on Lewis, Dr. Hobson, is consistently in coveralls (field) or scrubs (lab). So nice to see. *cough Dr. Isles cough*

(Anonymous) 2014-12-07 01:02 am (UTC)(link)from cosplay experience (lol) I can assure that they are not practical for either crime fighting or crime causing. unless your crime is tripping over shit and somehow causing property damage.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-07 12:22 am (UTC)(link)Just no. Someone jabs you with a weapon, that curvy bit is going to easily aim the pressure into spots that make the stab much, much worse - aiming it just above or between the breasts is a great way to die.
So I'm always impressed when I see armor that actually covers a woman and doesn't fall into the terrible "boob armor" lie. And you do occasionally see it! Aveline in Dragon Age 2 wore normal armor. Can't comment on how her hair was left down or the scarf around her neck, but overall pretty damn good for a female video game tank character.
Re: Most and least practical outfits
The funny thing is Bull is probably the worst offender but you CAN give him armor that covers his chest, it's just harder to find. There's a fun convo about (Cassandra's) practical armor in game, actually. (Which, btw, she looks gorgeous in, despite how covered she is.)
I always liked Aveline's armor and aesthetic; she always looked ready for everything. Isabela could be a hoot, but that outfit was a bit much for me.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-07 01:20 am (UTC)(link)The main female character (I forget the actor's name), spends the whole movie running around and jumping off buildings in sky-high heels. That sort of thing totally breaks the immersion and realism of the movie for me.
Also there's a swimming scene where she's wearing full make-up and it's all perfect, but I honestly expect that from Hollywood these days.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-07 07:24 pm (UTC)(link)I mean, I keep comfy walking shoes in my car as a matter of course, and I work in a call center. How could somebody who's an actual Secret Agent not do the same thing?
