Mistaken identity

Have you ever had someone think you were someone else? Or think you were something you weren't? Like someone thought you played ballet or something.

I've been mistaken for a girl when I was in my teens.

When I went to work for a coworker friend of my dad's, she thought I was going to be some kind of goth chick. It makes me wonder how my dad describes me . . .

I used to get taken for a dude sometimes, when my hair was shorter and I worse baggier shirts. Doesn't happen much anymore haha.

I took a particular standardized test (not any of the common ones) when I was 15. I finished very early, well before my parents could come pick me up, so I ended up waiting outside for them to come get me. There were a bunch of other parents hanging around the entrance to the test site waiting for their children, and someone asked whether I was waiting for my kid to finish the test.

One time a guy approached me and said we were in the same Bio class, and he couldn't believe how mean the professor had been to me. I had to tell him two or three times I wasn't who he thought. What was weird, though, was that he professor had been mean to the girl for something that also applies to me, but there was no way the guy could have known that. Sooo weird. (And I never took bio so it definitely wasn't me.)

Oh man, the list is SO long. On the Internet, I'm constantly mistaken for a man. Everyone also seems to think I'm way older than I really am. The specifics of my area of study combined with the fact that I'm knowledgeable about certain bizarre topics send people's imagination in all sorts of odd places - I think the only job I've never been assumed to do was firefighting.

I don't know what's up with all the assumptions, but, yeah. People always do that.

Not me but one of my friends used to get mistaken for me all the time for reasons that neither of us understood. I have red hair and she has brown hair, she wears glasses and I don't, and she's always been much thinner than me. I really don't get it.

Yeah, it's really weird, but apparently when I was 10 or 11, I had someone who looked very much like me visit the same swimming pool. We never met, but the lifeguards mixed us up.

Also, my name is similar to a local singer - so once, when I was ordering tickets for a play, the woman on the phone thought it was her. I must have disappointed her, no celebrity story for her.

Yes. I had an old bf think that I was a nude girl he saw online. Which doesn't sound quite right...I have to think how to phrase it:

He saw a nude girl online. It looked like someone had taken pictures of her without her knowledge. He thought that girl was me. Thankfully, it wasn't.

My boss accidentally called me by another girl's name earlier this year. I don't think she and I look anything alike, aside from the fact that we're both Asian. It took him a moment, and when I was like, "I'm not (X)." He was like, "Oh shit! Sorry!" We laughed it off.

I'm in my late 20s but people always assume I'm still a teenager.

And once, I was standing inside Starbucks waiting for my drink and a lady approached me and asked me if I was Native American. My friend and I just exchanged awkward glances with each other and I said no. The lady said that I "looked Native American".

There's a woman I've run into a few times who swears my girlfriend and I were in her yoga class a few years back. I am not attracted to women and have never taken a yoga class.

All the time. This week, someone told my they were so happy to see me singing in a church choir. I kind of giggled (as Pagan) and said, "No, that wasn't me."

In Florida, people were always coming up to me about being a cop. Well, I did often work in the courthouse...but not as an officer of the law.

I was mistaken for the female part of some friends of mine who were a married couple after a meeting. Someone came up and told me what a good point I had, blah blah blah. The male part of the couple came up and gave me a hug while this was going on, which made it even harder to say, "No, that wasn't me!"

Somebody came up to me once and asked if I play the didgeridoo.

I guess I just have that kind of face

the kind of face that makes me look like I play the didgeridoo

I get mistaken for a dancer a lot because of the way I stand posture-wise and because I tend to stand/walk on my toes when I'm not focusing on not doing it.

And for some reason as someone of Spanish decent. Black curly hair does not always equal Spanish person, yeesh! I actually got yelled at a guy for not speaking Spanish and ~being a disgrace to my heritage~. XD

I was mistaken for a boy when I was a teenager. More recently I've been mistaken for a college student.

Most people when they get to know me are like, 'You are way different from what I thought you would be.' I've had recruiters and HR people say that they wouldn't have matched my resume with me.

I've had other Americans think I was British (queen's english accent). Not sure I could convince an actual British person though.

Lol @ "played ballet"

When I lived in Chicago, I had a handful of people think I was some acquaintance of theirs from New Orleans. Multiple people at different times just came up to me thinking I was this other person - I guess I have a doppelganger?

In Europe, and some parts of the States, people have assumed I'm English or French. Alas, I'm thoroughly American.

Not so much me, but since my brother is only around 13 months younger than me teachers mistook him for me all the time. He hated it because apparently their first comment was usually "Oh you're Herpy's brother, are you smart as well?"

He was more of an average performer academically, so I always felt a little bad for him.

I have a twin sister people mistake me for quite a bit, but we're fraternal. Different hair/eye color, different height/weight, different facial structures. :/

(Here) I've heard a lot of "I can't tell intrigueing and elaminator apart", which I find confusing but amusing. Also flattering, as she's infinitely more intelligent.

Uhhhhh, IRL I can't recall anything, though I'm sure its happened. (Not exactly the same thing, but one of my aunt's can't remember my name for shit. She calls me by my brothers name. Always feel the love when I see her.)

When my husband was stationed in Germany, I got stopped on the base four or five times one year because people thought I was this other woman. I always wondered how close she resembled me...........and then I wondered if perhaps my grandfather or father had a deep, dark secret he never shared with the family and I have a half sister or cousin doppelganger running around the world.

5th grade. I had boyish short hair, but I was wearing a skirt. The sub thought I was a boy.
