I have no idea what this is, but??? Can anyone explain to me what a single possible valid criticism of Solaris could merit calling it "shit"?? I get not enjoying it, disliking the message, disliking Lem's work as a whole, but how is it not a very well-crafted book?..

/has never encountered Lem haters before, is very perplexed

i dunno, OP is a weeb or something? making a wild guess here based on the secret comparing a manga favourably over a 50-year-old polish sci-fi novel

That's what I thought, too, but I didn't want to jump to conclusions on the off chance someone can actually offer criticisms of the book that are at once harsh and thoughtful. In theory, it could be an interesting topic. But in practice... yes. You're probably correct.

Long story short, I didn't like the protagonist, and I thought it was a capital mistake to make him the only fully explored character. Even the alien, who had a fairly interesting personality from what was shown, was basically another vehicle to explore Blandy McBlanderson and his total lack of drive, positive goals, or personal scruples beyond doing whatever was most convenient. The MMC of AD is kinda bland, too, but it's not just a story about him--the girl the alien is modeled on is actually alive in this version, so we actually get input and perspective from more than one view. She adds an entire dimension to the narrative, since she can see how different the idealized, submissive, MMC-fixated alien is from herself. She pretty much single-handedly makes AD not shit, and I think she shows by comparison just how much Solaris suffers from tunnel vision.

Wow, I did not realize I had this much to say.

I completely agree that the protagonist is bland, but I think that's because the point of Solaris isn't its characters. They are mostly functions that are only there to convey Lem's thoughts and sentiments regarding this topic or another. And honestly, I don't get the "this character is not rounded, so it's a bad character" criticism, because almost none of Lem's characters are "rounded" - that's just the way he writes; his heroes are really not the most important part of his works (except maybe Ijon Tichy, and that does depend on the story).

This writing technique is obviously not everyone's cup of tea, but it's not inherently "good" or "bad".

That was a pretty good response and I apologize for calling you a weeb.
