I feel like the adoration that quote gets is just a byproduct of the cynicism that's everywhere these days. Because OF COURSE "you need everyone to think you're" smart. That's the only reason to answer a question not directly asked to you specifically.

Lately I've been realizing just how much I hate cynicism.

I was just thinking earlier today about how many people in my fandoms seem driven by cynicism. How cool they think they are for hate-watching or liking things ~*ironically*~ or "enlightening" people who seem more genuinely enthusiastic on the show's true flaws. It's a drag.

Yes, yes it is.

I have severe lack of brain-to-mouth filter. I tend to answer questions not asked of me/supply info when someone's not speaking directly to me just because it doesn't occur to me to NOT answer.

It has nothing to do with wanting to be seen as smart, I just don't stop to think about NOT saying something if I can answer the question or supply the needed information.

I do this too. My bio professor finally got to the point where she just ignores me since the rest of the class usually can't hear my answer anyway, because I was having a hard time changing my behavior in response to her "you can't answer every question". I've gotten better though.

I have gotten a lot better about it recently, especially since I have more than a few co-workers who are very... "HDU STEP ON MY TOES THEY WERE ASKING MEEE." so I try to focus/be conscious of who I'm responding to and whether I know if they'll care if I "interrupt".

This. And also saying answers out loud and interacting with the professor helps me to learn. I don't interrupt people, and I don't raise my hand to answer someone else's question unless they've been sitting stumped for a while. But I've also been in the place where I didn't know and the professor kept at me until I gave a wrong answer. That helps no one. It is uncomfortable for the person being pressured, and hearing the wrong answer is not helpful for the class.

Oh God I hated the pressuring. D: When I saw teachers do that to people I honestly wanted to just chuck things at them. Humiliating someone into giving ANY ANSWER just so you'll leave them alone does NOTHING productive. D:

Every professor does it in law school. I've mostly found that volunteering a lot means that it only happens to you occasionally, which is another reason I like to answer. At least I'm answering things I know and not having to answer things I don't.

When I think back, a lot of the "I WANT TO SAY IT" resulted from "get on with it, we don't want to waste this whole course on a single stupid question" and "Oh god, they obviously don't know the answer, just put them out of their misery and let someone else answer".

(Anonymous) 2014-12-10 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
Pretty much.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-10 03:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. In fact, seeming 'clever' is the one reason why I don't answer.
