That's what I got from that scene, too. Laurel's also constantly standing up for Wes when the others look down on him in the later episodes, so I really think she was just trying to get him out of the uncomfortable situation.

The scene you're talking about was in 1.5 "We're not friends". It wasn't about the situation with Wes though.
