The problem I always had with Beth though is that Carl seemed more useful to me than she ever was, and he's even younger (I realize lots of people hate Carl but he's actually one of my favourites). I also remember rolling my eyes so hard at her whole "I need a drink" quest too because it was just so pointless.

The hospital stuff was a bit of an improvement, though the first episode featuring them mainly showed off how Beth was not capable of carrying the A storyline by herself.

IMO, Beth's "I need a drink" thing was tied to her dad being gone. She's been uber-sheltered her whole life and she even admits that she never dared try a sip when her friends played drinking games because it would make her father mad.

So her daddy is gone, and as sort of a subconscious reaction, she HAS to do something he'd NEVER allow. Something she has always known would summon him instantly to chastise her. THAT is why she starts crying when she's given the peach schnapps. She has her drink. She's fully intending to drink it. And suddenly she has to face the fact that her father is NOT going to suddenly appear and tell her "Bethy, you know better than that!"

She *knows* he's dead, but on a deeper level she's sort of in denial until that confirmation of finality as she's holding that glass. And then of course she goes off the deep end getting drunk, insisting Daryl get drunk (because THAT is a good idea in the zombie apocalypse), and insisting they play drinking games. It's like Beth tried to condense college party life and new independence down into 24 hours. I swear I cringe so hard at the part where she's flipping the burning cabin off and insists Daryl do it too. "I'm an adult! I can cuss and everything now!" Ugh. Go sit in the corner, Beth. We'll call you when we need some singing done.
