Another politics thread (TW torture)

(Anonymous) 2014-12-10 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure which depresses me more about the recently released Senate report* on CIA torture: all the incredibly brutal shit that my country did in the name of its citizens, or the fact that we can pretty much assume for sure and certain that there will be no consequences whatsoever for any of it.

Fucking shit.

I read it too. What frustrates me is that I thought we knew all of this already. Waterboarding, physical and psychological violence against inmates, stress positions and sleep deprivation, force feeding (though the rectal feeding even made me double take)... what exactly are we supposed to be suddenly shocked about? We've known it for years, everyone knows the CIA tortures, and only fringe groups have been trying to keep the discussion going.

I can only hope that the report forces everyone to talk about it. Non-USA countries who were complicit in it can act shocked and condemn the CIA's actions. Politicians will have to take stands, and I think even a lot of Republicans won't feel comfortable supporting the grisly torture in the report - unless they spin it and pretend that valuable intelligence was uncovered, which the report admits didn't even happen.

Will individuals be prosecuted for war crimes? I'm not optimistic, but I am dearly hoping.
