And to this comment, I say amen, friend. A-fucking-men (http://pepper.idge.net/japanese/). -_-;

Your link is now my bible.

I took up Japanese in college. After considering the ease and practicality of various options, I decided to major in engineering instead, so Japanese Language was demoted to minor. I'm currently halfway through my third year.

I didn't really start watching anime until sometime during sophomore year. It used to make me furious that so many people assumed I was studying because of anime. And everyone did.

34 has a valid concern. Socially speaking, there is no lower form of geek than the fangirl or -boy beginning Japanese classes. People you've barely met give you condescending looks when you pass in the hallway. But all is not lost. If you manage to hang in there for long enough to actually read and speak a little, you suddenly become cool again. Most people never make it past the first semester.

Not to mention that it's a really awesome language and a lot of fun, if you go in for that sort of thing. If you have an interest and at least a little ability with languages, screw them. As long as you're prepared to work your ass off, it's totally worth it.
