I would maintain that there is a difference between "being the character" and "being in character." I'm well aware of the fact that I do not magically become some fictional character just because I'm wearing clothes that look like theirs, but it is still fun to act like them, or try to, especially around other people in the fandom who like to be around that kind of thing.
As for your posting to the original commenter, I don't know which posting you mean.
I'd be interested to discuss this with you further, but doing so in a public place while you remain anonymous does feel like an attack, and I'd rather not stunt the discussion by getting defensive. Send me an LJ PM, or e-mail me if you know the address. If you'd rather remain anonymous, though, I would guess that this is an attack, albeit a mild one, and I really wasn't expecting one when I made my regrettable comment in the first place.
