Exactly. I've got a story floating around up there, too, but I don't even have trans people to bounce it off. Soooo...guess the idea of a trans teen trying to deal in the debutante/mystic/rich white societies of the South will stay in my head forever.

IKR?! I lived in The South for a few years after college and every time all the societies did their balls and debutantes and whatever the boy version of that is (I don't remember) I couldn't stop thinking how horrible it must be to be trans and in a family that was all about that crap.

Unless you grew up in that sort of society, I'd hesitate to write about it, whether it has an interesting trans* character or not.

I find people who don't grow up in the South (especially debutante South, which is a very, very small subset) write it poorly, even if they spent lots of time here.

So very discourage.

On the other hand, historically, many of the most popular books have been written by outsiders looking in. They have a viewpoint that better matches that of prospective readers, and notice things that those who grew up take for granted.

It's true that they're not always that accurate, and can even be offensive, but accuracy isn't always what readers want.
