Missing the point much, OP? There's a difference between "I can't afford this so make it cheaper just for me" and "I think you're charging too much for it". This comment falls into the latter category, and while it might be rude for its own reasons, it has nothing whatsoever to do with the OP's point. Using his/her own analogy, it's less "I can't afford to live on an island so maybe you should drop the prices for me!!" and more "I hope you're not expecting to sell many of those islands, bro." Both douchey in their own right, but at least one does it under the guise of trying to be constructive.

Except that nine times out of ten, what they mean is, "I can't afford this super awesome art with detailed background and shading and such for five dollars, MAKE IT CHEAPER!"

Doesn't matter what they mean. You can only go by what they actually say, and if they don't actually say "I can't afford it", then that's not what the actual statement is about.
