Statistics, product fact from other decades...

[personal profile] kallanda_lee 2014-12-13 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
So, for a work of fiction I'm wondering - where do you find these things. For example, what were the most popular names in the 60's? Most popular hobbies in the '70's? Common products one would use then - washing products, but even car brands etc. Anyone know?

Dude. Just google the question. But be a little more specific. Most popular where? US name rankings will be different than UK, Russia, etc., and also - boy or girl? Here's what the Social Security website says: http://www.ssa.gov/oact/babynames/decades/names1960s.html

Here's a lot of stuff on the 70's: http://www.thepeoplehistory.com/1970s.html

Tv ads from the 70's: http://www.tvparty.com/70com2.html
Popular shampoos: http://prince.org/msg/100/352753

Just, you know, be specific in your wording. And this is all US stuff.....

also try looking through little_details over on LJ. Someone might have asked it or posted another resource. Gather all of your thoughts and ask them questions. They get mad if you haven't done a basic search term, but people are usually super helpful.

Seconding little_details if you cannot find your information from basic google-fu. My sister is one of the main mods there (orange_fell).

I google extensively first, because it's amazing how much info is online for writers, especially for something in recent history. You can probably find old commercials on youtube, in fact, or someone will be blogging about it for nostalgia.

Hobbies I remember: macrame, candlemaking, pottery, knitting, yoga. People made their own yogurt and cluttered up their windows with ferns and spider plants in handmade pots with macrame hangers. The magazines Mother Earth and Organic Gardening got their start then; the 1970s is when my family started composting. I remember coveting Jordache jeans, Gunne Saxe sundresses, and Candies slides; tiered skirts with tiny calico prints, peasant blouses, velvet jackets and Farrah Fawcett hair were the looks my classmates favored. And we passed Judy Blume's Forever from hand to hand.

Sorry, I should have added, this is in the US, east coast--I lived in a suburb of Philadelphia.

One little tidbit I also remember--at that time, want ads were segregated according to whether a male or female employee was wanted. I shit you not. Hard to imagine nowadays, but true.

The community little-details.livejournal.com was pretty much created for those kinds of questions!

I use that community a lot for weirdly specific questions about injuries. Google will get you general information, but little-details is great for getting a lot more detailed and sometimes anecdotal information.
