Any posting wizards out there.....?

[personal profile] tabaqui 2014-12-13 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I have old Word .doc files - 2009 Word. When I wrote them, all the italic and bold stuff I did re: keyboard shortcuts, so instead of the html stuff < i > and like, I just did ctrl i and ctrl b for italics and bold.

Now, i'm trying to post this stuff on AO3, and it sees *none* of that code. And when I hand-code the < i > stuff in, it *adds more*, so by the end of the .doc i've got < i > six or eight times before and after every paragraph, and i have no idea how to make it stoooooooop. Rich Text doesn't seem to do anything but add a billion bits of code but still *no italics and bolds* where it should be.

Grumpy and frustrated!

You can try upload the original doc to your mail, user the preview mode and then ctrl+U to see the code.
That code should have both the < b > and < i > as well as the space codes (either < br < or > p > ), so just copy-paste it on AO3.

In theory it should keep the format.
(I did this only once, when modding an exchange and the pitch-hitter didn't include the html tags for their fic. It worked on LJ, so I don't see why it won't work on AO3)

Have you tried using the Rich Text option as well as HTML? One might work better than the other. (I've had weirdness like that happen on AO3 as well but I can't remember what I did to fix it!)

Yeah, Rich Text makes a gods-awful mess, block of text thing that is baffling as hell.

Anymore, i type straight into Google.Docs and that works just fine, but this old stuff.....

Thanks!

Can't Word convert a .doc file to HTML?

It can, but it tosses in a ton of extra code that just makes things a mess. Word is a bit of a pain.

To be honest, I'd just copy it to Notepad (to make it plaintext), and either handcode in the formatting in HTML before you copy it over, or do the formatting in the posting window on AO3. I've found that's the only surefire way to get rid of all the extraneous HTML code Word throws into their document formats so you can post it properly.

I'm starting to think that's going to be the only way to do it. Word can certainly be a gigantic pain in the ass.
