LARPing!

(Anonymous) 2014-12-13 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Live Action Role Playing. Has anyone ever done it? What have been your experiences?

I'm thinking of joining a group...but I'm hesitant.

I've never really done it, but I'm definitely geeky enough where that'd be a possibility. Actually my friend was telling me about this Harry Potter LARP that takes place in Poland, it's in a castle and you're basically at Hogwarts for four days. Hardcore larping! I doubt I'll do it but it looked totally amazing by the videos.

I never did, but a friend of mine does. He does like little characters in larger groups - like say, the orc at the tavern, or one of the soldiers etc. Says it's a lot of fun.

I've been to a few LARPs before but I just can't get into it and I just feel embarrassed the whole time :\

If you are a black guy, be a bard or a healer. You don't want to have anything that even looks slightly like a weapon.

Does it help if I'm a [hispanic] girl?

I was looking through their gallery and I only saw three or four people who were black or hispanic, and they were all guys. :| I guess it's healer for me! (Besides, making the weapons seems terribly time consuming. Awesome, but time consuming)

I don't know your neighborhood or the neighborhood where you'll be larping, but I would lean to something un-weaponed and and an outfit without a hood. Preferably one without sleeves too. Too many cops are too edgy, and too many middle aged white folks are too quick to call those cops. It sucks that it should restrict your choices, but this is the world we live in. Better that than you ending up being shot because of some triggerhappy fool. I'd personally be wary of that group unless you can get a token white guy or girl in it. One who looks preppy enough too.

I assume that OP was referencing this case where a black male cosplayer (Darien Hunt) was shot for having a fake sword as part of his costume. Didn't get the attention Ferguson, Trayvon, etc. did, but it's probably part of that trend.

I suspect you're okay having a weapon. I don't think the police go after Hispanic girls that much, like they do black guys.

If you are LARPing in a group with with black guys or other hispanics though, the last thing you want is a prank call saying there is a group of armed ethnics running around. You'd get a full SWAT response, make sure there is at least one clean cut white guy (no hipster beards or scruffy stubble) in the group to make sure the police are a little calmer in the response. Remember, it only takes one worried/malicious call and one bad cop.

OP

Yeah, I think I'd be alright.

But are you serious about Darien Hunt? WTF?! I can't believe this. Thanks for the info, I had no idea that happened. This shit is crazy.

I have a lot of fun! I haven't been to a game in awhile, because I live pretty far from my group, but I always have fun when I go. I play World of Darkness stuff--specifically Mage: The Awakening. I go pretend to be a wizard on Sundays.

World of Darkness stuff is more about social and political games, so I'm a bit clumsy at it, but it's still fun to try. Some of my friends do a post-apocalyptic-themed game, the kind where you're out in a field camping all weekend and I'd really like to try it out.

sort of. I play in an annual event game based on LOTR, but there's no playacting, no "in-character" stuff. We basically play tag in costumes and sometimes Evil wins when Sauron captures the hobbit with the ring.

so, it's fun, and low-key. but a lot of LARPs aren't like that, they're much heavier on the playacting and tbh that skeeves me out (and I say this as a cosplayer and forum-RPer). I don't like playing pretend. On the other end of the spectrum are the combat-heavy ones, the boffers who RP scenarios during their boffer tournaments. I can't do that either. so if you want to get into it, scope out the style of game and expectations first. some people really like making up character sheets and talking in pretentious accents all day, some would rather screw the character sheets and just hit things with foam swords, and then there's people like me who don't do characters but enjoy dressing up in costumes. there's something for everyone if you look hard enough.

What kind of LARP? There's a pretty big difference between MET/other improv-style social LARPs and the boffer LARP thing, and they draw pretty different crowds.

I used to play Sabbat (a vampire LARP) most weekends. My ex and I would go to the local college campus and hang out. It was a lot of fun, until out-of-character personality conflicts happened.
