Magic Knight Rayearth, which pulled the 'grim magical girl' twist way before Madoka, even if it isn't nearly as grimdark it still counts to me.

Though it's making me miss the way CLAMP used to be.

MKR deserves a lot more credit then it typically gets. Especially for that ending to the first story. Turning around the "save the princess" trope was really cool and when I first saw the anime I did not see it coming at all (especially since it really isn't grimdark like Madoka, you don't expect the ending to be as tragic as it was.)

It really does. I consider it to be a very special anime to me, since nothing at the time really went in that direction before during my childhood anime obsession.

I started watching it again recently and have decided to introduce my cousin to it. She's an anime fan and I can't wait to see her reaction to the ending!

Do you prefer grim/dark anime? Or is it just a nice twist for you?

Not particularly. Fluffy, safe shoujo anime was rampant in my childhood and nothing came close to MKR's first season ending. It was a huge, tragic twist that I didn't expect and can't forget.
