Whedon said he was telling the truth about people being scared of her, so he wasn't doing it to isolate her.

Well, Cal did say that everyone would eventually be afraid of her. “He has his reasons for saying that,” executive producer Jed Whedon says. “Maybe it’s based on experience. We’ll learn that he’s obviously a crazy person, but a lot of what he says isn’t that crazy.”

And weren't the villagers he killed HYDRA agents? Has he actually killed any innocent people yet?

That doesn't make it not abusive behavior, and anyway would only excuse one of the things he's said or done. Why would any of it endear him at all to Skye? She didn't even want the "gift" he was trying to force on her.
