Yeah, this is a really good point. I also have to say that as much as I like the idea of canon bisexual Steve, the entitlement of fans gets under my skin.

At the end of the day, these aren't our characters. They're Marvel's and we don't get to dictate what's done with them.

I still love bisexual Steve in fanfic and I think it's okay for fans to say that they'd like this to be canon, but *demanding* that it be so crosses a line.

That's how it is though, if you want anything. Women and people who aren't in a position of power, like fans, are taught to keep your head down and be polite and if you're good all year long maybe Santa-CEO will read your mind and give you what you really hope for.

And time and history have shown us you really need to go right up to the fat man, sit down on his lap, and go "I want this." Because otherwise you're getting the same socks you got last year, and the year before, and the year before that, because it's always been good enough for you before.

If you shut up and be polite and don't bother the powers that be then the loud screamers get what they want instead. It's why one or two pissed off people can get books banned from schools.

You want Steve to be bisexual, what's your plan to get him that way? Sit quietly and think it really, really hard? Maybe do a post on your locked livejournal about how cool it would be? Or a comment like this one? The heads at Disney are sure to see it and know how you feel, really!

Heck, and what's the worst that can happen with fans messaging and demanding Steve be made explicitly bi in canon? He somehow magically gets even less bi than before?

I agree, sending harassing messages seems crass. Generally the number one complaint I heard when Bronies were new was that they were being loud and demanding stuff from Hasbro, and they were getting it! The adult women who've been hardcore fans since G1 never said a peep and never got anything! How dare they! And yeah, they're known as loud obnoxious fanbrats, but they have DJP0ny and 'Muffin' toys for no reason other than they asked for them. They can get any Hasbro character 3D printed through Shapeways free and legal, because they asked for it.

If you have a better middle ground, a way to tell the people in charge clearly what you want, without sounding entitled, please share it. Finding a middle ground would be amazing.

I... Did you really just compare the struggles women have historically gone through to the struggles fans go through? Is that a thing that just happened? Because holy shit, there is no way you're not a troll.

It was meant to point out that socially a lot of women are taught to be polite. To not be a 'bitch' or 'bossy' or 'nagging', where as guys are taught to 'take charge' and 'be assertive' and 'show leadership'.

And there's probably a lot of overlap between that and the fandom ideas that we should all keep our heads down and be grateful and polite and not demanding. And it's probably not a coincidence that they chose a feminism twitter as their example to shame for stepping out of line and not being a "good fan".

I did not mean to make light of historical struggles and I'm sorry it came across that way.
