Yeah but I've noticed in different fandoms those that talk the most against a ship happen to like the rival ship of the one that is their notp.
IMHO this is why people think they are annoying fans whining about the ship that 'gets in the way of' their otp and just carrying on shipper wars concealed as objective criticism.

But are they really saying it's "objective criticism"? Because all criticism of art is inherently subjective. Everything is based on perception. One man's trash is another man's treasure and all that. Unless they're flat out saying it's objective fact, of course.

I say this because people seem to get weirdly upset when the writing of a pairing is criticized which I, personally, don't understand. Why does one person's opinion bother you so much?

I've never liked Harry/Ginny for example. I think it's very poorly written and developed. But I don't dislike Ginny in and of herself and I don't even ship Harry with anyone else. Harry Potter is a series where I have zero interest in shipping to be honest. But the pairing just never worked for me.

Or there's one of my NOTPs which is Zutara. I love both characters, but I don't like them together because I've always felt that Katara's role in the story (in regards to Zuko at least) was to be the sister he *should* have had. That she basically showed how Zuko could have had a loving relationship with Azula had their father not pitted them against each other. That's why I dislike the pairing -- because I think their sibling bond is beautiful. If you do like Zutara, feel free to but I, personally, do not. And my agreement with you isn't going to validate your ship.

If someone is spamming the pairing tag or saying bigoted things (calling a female character a c*nt or a b*tch or using racial or homophobic slurs for example), then that's a completely different story, of course. But just sharing their opinion on the writing? Why care? You're never going to get consensus and, in my opinion, it just looks insecure when one launches personal attacks against someone just for disagreeing.

why bother censoring the words "cunt" and "bitch"? we all know what words you're referring to, it's not like putting an asterisk lessens the impact or something. you could have just said "sexist slurs" if you didn't want to type the actual words

okay. I mean, it's not a big deal.

here you go:

"If someone is spamming the pairing tag or saying bigoted things (using sexist or racial or homophobic slurs for example), then that's a completely different story, of course."

Better?

I guess. I was mostly just wondering why you bothered censoring it in the first place. I see a lot of people censor words like that and there doesn't seem to be much of a point to it aside from giving the words even more power than they already have

(Anonymous) 2014-12-15 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
I'm just not in the habit of writing them out.

I also post a lot on a family friendly forum and we have to censor words like shit or asshole or anything else so whenever I do happen to write such a word, I'm just in the habit of censoring it I suppose.

Ah, gotcha. The forum thing makes sense

I used to think people who had NOTPs were just using the term as shorthand for "pairing that breaks up my preferred ship," because in 20 years of fandom involvement, I'd never had a NOTP myself, only ships I liked and sought out fanworks for, and ships I didn't see the appeal of and ignored. Then came a pairing I hated so much that it's part of the reason I stopped watching a show--and I don't ship either character in it with anyone else. It wasn't that I hated the idea of either character in a relationship full stop, but this particular one gave me the screaming-heebie-jeebies. If I'd stuck around I might have started shipping both halves of the pairing with other characters just to break them up, but I bailed on the show before that happened. Some people with a NOTP have an opposing OTP, but I bet there's plenty of other fans like me out there.

I've run into a few pairings like that, where there's almost a visceral reaction to something about them or their dynamic.

I don't see why having a rival ship makes having a NOTP bad. A person could have reasons why their they dislike their NOTP that does not have much relation to their OTP.
