In this case, I'm betting "homophobic fan" = anyone who doesn't think him and Lee Pace are in lurrrrrve.

I think there are probably quite a few homophobic fans. The Hobbit is a big movie, so it only stands to reason that some of its fans are homophobic, just by law of averages.

I think the implication is that he has female fans who have the hots for him and don't want him to be gay because then they have no chance with him and can't daydream about him, and said fans might get militantly defensive. I have no idea - I've never looked into his fanbase and have barely dipped my toes into Hobbit fandom.
