Being active is really key and yeah you'll have to throw yourself out there a lot. Sometimes you'll be noticed, sometimes not, but hopefully eventually a friendship will happen.

This is so true, but man, it's a lot of work when being outgoing doesn't come naturally.

True. Speaking from experience as a major introvert but nothing will happen if you don't put yourself out there. There's so much going on (online) that people are unlikely to notice a lurker or someone who comments sparingly. Or they may notice but ppl are forgetful so activity = reminder that you're there and as familiarity grows so will conversations.
Just got to gather flagging energy and keep putting yourself out there - and eventually you will have enough of a friendship fandom base that you can back off here and there and not be so constant in your activity :)

(Not meaning this as attack on anyone's life choices or preferences. Personally I prefer to lurk, but I've has a giant learning curve on forced social actions this year in order to build the social base so yeah in my experience - the above)

Oh, yeah, absolutely! I'm huge on lurking in most places, but when I put in a little effort, at least, I get a few acquaintances here and there, and I've got one really good friend to show from back when I was being active in the RP scene. But it's definitely something I have to turn on and think carefully about maintaining (much like in real life, as an introvert) compared to the fandom extroverts who can't seem to do anything without making a million friends by accident, haha. I envy them a little, except I imagine they sometimes wish they knew how to turn it off.

I think the tl;dr is that people are sims and you do need to be in their face sometimes XD
