For years I thought Sulu was not paired off with any female character in canon because they knew George Takei was gay, then I found out he didn't come out till after the show was over. Now I'm really confused.

You know, you could say Asian or even Japanese, but I guess it's better to group everyone who isn't white into a amorphous blob of culture and history.

Lol, what. I'm referring to the tendency of older Western tv not to give non-white men love interests (see also Geordi in TNG).

Uh, Geordi got love interests. Maybe not as many as say Picard and Riker, but Geordi did have a few.
