Same here, OP.

Sorry, OP, that is a common assumption. Fortunately for me, I do love both.

Strange. I was under the impression there was a war between the two fandoms and you couldn't like one without hating the other. At least until George Takei united us all against the Twilight fandom.

Same, I have met people arguing this war was so stupid because they are such different stories.

The only thing they have in common is the 'Star' part of the titles, and the fact that they're science fiction.

Yep. (Well, one person said "They cannot be compared. Star Trek is Science Fiction and Star Wars is Science Fantasy!" as his argument as to why the fandom thing is stupid.)

I can roll with that. Whatever you call it, it's stupid. Not even funny stupid. Just stupid. George Takei did us all a good turn by uniting us.

It's like deja vu from the previous secret: fandoms that have almost nothing in common at each other's throats. :(

(Anonymous) 2014-12-18 06:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I have grown up in both fandoms (35+ years) and the only time I have *ever* heard about wars between the fandoms is from people not in either fandom and the media.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-18 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
you sound like my brother, lol

wait

Vinny....?

(Anonymous) 2014-12-18 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
And also the opposite. I adore Star Wars, but have just a passing familiarity with Star Trek. The two interests are not at all related.

Hah, it works vice versa, too.

I did get into Star Trek later on - but fact is, they're very different worlds.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-18 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
I am yet another person who likes both. Started with Wars, then got into Trek.

Although maybe I'm unusual in that I prefer both the prequels and Star Trek TOS to the Star Wars original trilogy.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-18 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I do like both, though I'm primarily a Trekkie. I've never had someone say that to me, though. Or, well. I've had a couple of family members who've only the barest knowledge of either say it, on the grounds that they're the only things they know in remotely the same genre and essentially what they're asking me is do I like sci-fi. People who do have a passing or greater knowledge of both are more likely to assume that if I like one then I must hate the other, on the grounds that Star Wars fans love Star Wars and Star Trek fans love Star Trek and never the twain shall meet.

Are you talking more with fans (of either) or are you talking with non-genre people mostly?

Unfortunately, with JJ having helmed/helming both franchises' movies, this debate will probably get worse again.

I thought that mentality died in middle school....

I was the odd one out. I liked both, but I kept getting "WHY would you like THAT?" all the time. Ugh.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-18 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
My husband wore a trek-inspired outfit with friends to a thing once and tons of folks wanted pics with them. Since I didn't dress up, I was usually the photographer. One guy was so excited, and asked if he could get a pic to show his girlfriend because she was "a huge star wars fan." I was in the corner dying laughing and trying to hide it. I really wanted to see what his girlfriend had to say about the pic, if she really was a star wars fan and not a star trek fan.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-18 06:12 am (UTC)(link)
It sounds like this a direct correlation people are making, but still--don't most people who like Star Wars go on to assume everyone likes Star Wars, because it was such a big thing?

(Anonymous) 2014-12-18 06:48 am (UTC)(link)
Why can#t we all be bi-trek-tual?

I like both. Or, well, parts of both.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-18 07:21 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not that much of a fan of the original Star Trek series or the related movies (blasphemy, I know) or the Star Wars prequels and extended universe.

I also like Battlestar Galactica (1978), Stargate (Movie, SG-1, and Atlantis), Spaceballs, Galaxy Quest, Earth Star Voyager and probably some other space sagas that I can't think of right now.

So, um, sorry - people like me are probably the reason that some assume that.

Re: I like both. Or, well, parts of both.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-18 07:36 am (UTC)(link)
If you didn't like Galaxy Quest, that would be strange, wouldn't it?

I like the Treks OK. I don't think Enterprise is bad. I like most of the Stargate stuff. I like A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back, and I liked the Ewok stuff as a kid. I like Firefly mostly.

Wasn't nuts about Spaceballs.

Re: I like both. Or, well, parts of both.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-18 08:08 am (UTC)(link)
ayrt

If you didn't like Galaxy Quest, that would be strange, wouldn't it? Yes, yes, it would.

Totally forgot about Firefly, liked that too, thanks for reminding me.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-18 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I like both, for very different reasons, but I definitely prefer Star Trek. That is my fandom. Star Wars is just some movies I liked that happened to have some cool toys. It makes me a little crazy when people in my real life can't tell the two things apart.

My Mom loves Star Trek, but doesn't care about Star Wars.

I love both.

But they're entirely different things. I don't see why people think liking one should automatically mean you like the other. It makes no sense.
