Pre-Flight panic

(Anonymous) 2014-12-18 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
No, not because I'm scared of flying. I am just terrified of getting to the airport and realizing that I forgot my passport or something!

I'm flying a long international flight tomorrow to go home for the holidays and am freaking out! Even though I've done these sorts of flights loads of times before I always convince myself that I'm going to be late, forget something, my ticket would somehow be invalid (?), or whatever will go wrong, and then the world will end.

Me too, anon. What I do is make a checklist waaaaay ahead of time to be sure I have everything important on there, and then check them off as I pack/organize before my departure.

Hahaha I know that feeling.

The only thing that really helps for me is constantly triple-checking that you have everything, and leaving absurdly early to make sure the flight's on time.

I guess the other thing is that, as long as you have your passport and your ticket, everything else can pretty much be solved. Heck, even having your ticket isn't that necessary, they can print that at the airport. If you miss your flight, you can get another. If you forget something, you can probably do without, or buy one where you're going. It often helps me to kind of narrow the anxiety down to a very specific, core checklist of things.

Make a checklist and check it off, then make a last-minute checklist and check it off as you head out the door. You will be fine. I've traveled a lot now, but in the first few years I was always in a semi-panicked state until I was actually seated in the plane and it had reached cruising altitude.

Generally, I combat this by making sure everything I need to bring with me is sitting in front of the door before I go to bed, and leaving for the airport ridiculously early.

heh, I do that just for domestic flights. I'm always afraid I'll forget to take my cat to board at the vet's, or miss the airport shuttle. And worse: as soon as I'm halfway to the airport I just KNOW I left the front door unlocked.
