I'm a huge fan of 'go big of go home', and I'm a firm believer that you should never, ever make it easy for a character...

But I do think there's such thing as Too Much, and that if you just keep piling bad things onto a character then it stops being interesting and starts being thrown in for shock.

It's an easy way to get a big eye roll from me. I think it's also linked to my disgust for transparent drama / audience manipulation.

Oh yeah, definitely. If it's not advancing the plot in one way or another, it shouldn't be there. I especially hate it when it's got to do with cheating. It's such a cop-out, and it rarely adds anything apart from kicking a character while they're down, and/or serving as a substitute for actual content.
