yeah i was too harsh in that comment, but it's still frustrating to listen to people talk about ~true art~ when they're not even able to acknowledge modern art's importance as a movement

it comes off as wanting the prestige of being called art without any concern of what that might entail

Hm, I'd say it's more of using "modern art" as a catch-all for "current art" and not really knowing about modern art as an artistic era. Most people don't really know their art history well (myself included).

But then I also don't really associate art with "prestige"...
