Re: unpopular opinions

I can agree that personal attacks are awful. I think they're another sign that the person is a poor debator and they have to go, "You just think that because you're X, Y,Z!" which is an ad hominem at the end of the day.

But when people start complaining about someone "starting up wank again" even though nothing personal has been said, I can't help but think that they're just bitter that they can't back up their points.

No one is FORCING you to participate after all, so I don't see why it would bother someone if other people want rehash old topics.

But, yes, personal attacks suck -- I agree with you there.

In my experience, people usually say that when it's topics that have led to those kinds of awful, acrimonious arguments in the past.

But, yes, you make some valid points.

I'm a little disappointed, I suppose, because I broke into a fandom kind of late and whenever I want to talk about controversial topics. there's always someone complaining about how I'm trying to start up wank again.

It just isn't at all conducive to new fans who don't know the history. And even for people who have been in fandom for a while, after some time, don't you think it's best to let it go?

Yeah, I definitely get where you're coming from, that does super suck. If it's specifically people complaining about old wank, that is definitely pretty weak. I guess I'm just saying that wank can definitely be a bad thing, especially in the moment.
