What brand did you use? I use Ohropax Soft Foam earplugs, which stay in even when I use them to sleep. They don't block out sound completely (which I prefer), but they make outside noise ignorable. When I work I still want to be able to hear the bell ringing, or when sleeping my alarm clock in the morning.
