I'd love to hear your thoughts! :D

Okay, I saw a post on tumblr the other day that said Wirt's real name is Edward, and "Wirt" is how Greg pronounced it as a baby and it stuck. I think it was just a headcanon, but I'm adpoting it because it makes total sense and before then "Where the hell did the name Wirt come from?" was one of my biggest questions, of all things, about the show.

But then I started thinking about how it would have caught on with people at school. I imagine Wirt groaned a lot when his parents picked the name up from Greg, but eventually he gave in and reluctantly got used to it. And then one year at school there was a new teacher who did the thing during first role-call where they ask everyone "And do you have a nickname you go by instead?" Wirt was nervous since it was the first day, so he didn't think and just blurted out "Wirt!" and that was that.

Yeah... I'm really into names and character naming. (Another variant headcanon I just thought of is that maybe Wirt's real name is something that sounds nothing at all like "Wirt," and Greg made his nickname up out of nowhere when he was a bit older and didn't have a frog to inflict random names on yet.)

I've also been watching Gravity Falls, and the kid's name is straight-up "Dipper" in that show, so I honestly didn't think anything of "Wirt" at first, but I like that headcanon! My two younger brothers have nick-names that we've called them since they were babies, and even our parent's took to calling them that, so I can see how it spread.

Though I like the idea that maybe Greg made Wirt a gift of some sort, like, he wanted to draw on Wirt's lunchbag or something, so when Wirt got to school, he had this really embarrassing lunchbag/halloween card/something ridiculously adorable thing that said "WIRT" in big horribly-drawn letters, and someone else got their hands on it, and that's how it spread.

Man, so many good ideas for where his name came from! I like it, though, it suits him; "Edward" just doesn't in my opinion.

I haven't actually seen Gravity Falls (yet), but I thought I read somewhere that "Dipper" was a nickname because of a birthmark that looked like the Big Dipper, and his real name is an unreveal.

The present idea is adorable! Maybe Greg heard one of his parents call his brother a "worry-wart" (which definitely suits him) only he heard it as "Wirrywirt" or something and then it just became "Wirt."

You're completely right, for some reason I got it mixed up in my head, and thought that his name really was Dipper because of his birthmark, and not a nick-name because of his birthmark. It really is just a nick-name, though.

Oh my goodness, Greg hearing Wirt being called a "worry wart" is the cutest thing. I know I've seen some fic that mention that in passing, but Greg picking up on it would be super cute!
