Is Korrasami 'queer baiting'?

(Anonymous) 2014-12-18 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
I keep seeing this (The crosstaggers are strong with one night before the finale left) and I don't personally see it. The only thing that might count as that would be the blush, but Korra blushes when she's complimented (See:Bolin, never got or implied to get with him, so) I don't see them doing friendship stuff as romantic. When I think of queer baiting, I think of SPN. And /maybe/ the Adventure Time comics (Though they're not canon, the Bubbline as vampire/candy queens thing was cute) Korrasami is just reading as another Zutara to me. Really popular, but never was really there.

It isn't queer baiting and anyone who thinks so is a goddamn idiot. Korrasami is the Zutara of LoK.

I'm 99% sure that anyone who calls Korrasami "queer baiting" has never had a single friend in their life. There's pretty much nothing that suggests they're anything more than friends and this is coming from someone who would be thrilled if they became canon (never gonna happen but hey...)

How is SPN queerbaiting? The writers made it clear that Dean is straight and nothing would happen.

Misha joking around with service to fans in cons isn't queerbaiting.

Actually, that would mean SPN fits the real definition of queerbaiting, which is when hints of queerness continue to be implied in canon with a character who the writers outright say is straight and that's final.

But the "hints of queerness" are a couple random fanservice jokes. (Like "Cas get out of my ass") Anything else is in the eye of the beholder and the own fan's interpretation.

Not really the cons, but the whole "I love you" blooper reel thing, some of the writers teasing, Dean's weird obsession with Cas, etc. Oh, and I think in one of their heaven's there are pictures of Cas on the wall or something? Or there was going to be but they cut it out?

I don't ship Destiel

by the way. I find the fandom kind of obnoxious, I just admit I did see where some of their complaints were coming from. Not at all for Korrasami, though.

I think people are so used to seeing friendships as being superficial next to romances that when they DO see a deep, meaningful, and mutually supportive friendship, we end up subconsciously coding them as romances - because for most movies and TV shows, that often is used as a shorthand for romance or intentional subtext.

I loved the Katara and Zuko friendship in the original series, and while I could see where people were coming from for the romance...I saw that for pretty much every friendship (or hateship, since my Avatar OTP is Jet/Zuko for delightfully fucked up reasons).

Pretty much same goes for Korra and Asami, and in many ways compounded by the fact they're both women. When so many major movies and TV shows still can't pass the Bechdel test, how often do we see female friendships? And more importantly, how often do we see female friendships where they aren't in competition with each other, or secretly one or both of them isn't actually a good friend? This is compounded by the fact they share an ex-boyfriend - in more movies and shows than not, any personal connection to the same man is fertile ground for competition, regardless of how tenuous that connection is or should be. Not only does their past relationships with Mako not interfere with their current friendship, they can even make light of that messy history - which just serves to further highlight their friendship with each other.

Bubbline has actually been confirmed as canon but broken up

No, it wasn't. The VA for Marceline joked about it at a con and promptly took it back. (The jeeze, don't take everything I say so seriously tweet) The creator never said they were dating.

nayrt

Yeah, I remember that. I think she deleted the tweet pretty quickly though so idk what's going on there. If she was joking then it was pretty shitty of her because she made it sound fairly believable in the video where she talked about it

Wasn't that tweet never confirmed to be about the Bubbline comment? I googled that shit extensively and only got sources reporting her confirmation that they had dated, nothing about her taking it back.

And she only deleted the tweet because people assumed it was about Bubbline and immediately harassed her for being homophobic.

How was it not about Bubbline, though? She told a story about how it can't be canon because other countries would ban it. Seems pretty fake to me.

Well, this is what she said

I don't think so, they've only been portrayed as good friends in the show? No "are you dating?" Questions from other characters played off or jokes like that that I am aware if*

I think some of the interviews could be seen as such, because doing the whole vagueness about end game with more high risk unlikely relationships is baity.
