Okay, I think it should be legal, but I can still understand other people's objections. Most of them are non-religious, even, and involve the potential for abuse. Could elderly or mentally disabled people be coerced into taking the option by unscrupulous carers or relatives who were looking to save money/get rid of an inconvenience? Hell, would poor people be pressured into euthanasia when faced with the potential of bankrupting their families? What type of counseling would be required beforehand? Would euthanasia ever be an acceptable option for someone with clinical depression or another mental illness? If so, when? Etc.

Those I certainly understand as vital concerns. There are numerous factors to deal with and the potential for abuse is frightening. I just can't see the difficulties as grounds for blanket objection.

Here in Oregon we've had an assisted-suicide law on the books for quite some time now, and the abuses you mention (which I agree would be a legitimate ethical concern) simply haven't happened. So that's some good news.

AYRT -- glad to hear it! Although, IIRC, Oregon has half-way decent social services. I'd be more worried about many of these issues in a state with no/shitty safety nets, like Florida or Mississippi. This is one of those issues that I debate with myself whether it would be better to handle it on the state level or the federal level. On the one hand, when you leave it to the states, you end with with some Americans having better rights than others based on geography, but you also increase the chance that the population of states that pass a bill have a vested interest in actually making it work. On the other, theoretically a federal ruling would also come with some sort of standardized controls to alleviate the concerns, but that assumes the feds can actually handle that sort of thing and that's a pretty generous assumption these days.
