Totally unofficial office conversation suggested that most people there knew about Sherlock (which airs on PBS here as part of the Masterpiece Mystery series) and had seen at least a little bit of it, because it was talked about a lot and made news, etc. It's sort of in the same category with Downton Abbey - "classy" British stuff you've got to watch if you want to seem cultured. Elementary wasn't nearly as well-known.
