I'm in the US. Totally unofficial office conversation suggested that most people there knew about Sherlock (which airs on PBS here as part of the Masterpiece Mystery series) and had seen at least a little bit of it, because it was talked about a lot and made news, etc. It's sort of in the same category with Downton Abbey - "classy" British stuff you've got to watch if you want to seem cultured. Elementary wasn't nearly as well-known.
