There's a post on tumblr about how the world beyond is basically Dante's Infernos' purgatory, hence why the different people were treated differently, they were in different parts of "puragatory".

It is any interesting concept, though, that I'd love to see gone over more. Apparently there were supposed to be 20 episodes, originally? I'd love it if the 10 cut episodes were turned into comics. There's already one out, right?

On the one hand I liked all the hints about it being purgatory and such, but on the other hand people had families and lives and more-- maybe I just don't know enough about the purgatory mythology, but I'd still like more exploration.

I didn't know there are/are plans to have comics, which sounds awesome!
