I watched it in the movie theatre when it came out, and the whole audience just sat there mostly silent until the two characters rolled down the hill. Then, they started laughing at everything. When I watched it a second time, I laughed from the beginning, but upon first viewing I (and apparently the rest of the audience) just didn't realize that the cheesy weirdness was a deliberate part of the joke - and not just bad acting, bad writing.

I found it on Netflix a while ago, might still be there if you want to give it a try.
