If you like a non-typical man in a romance role, try Cotillion by Georgette Heyer. It's my favourite novel of hers because Freddy, the hero, is a rather absent-minded, mild-mannered inconsequential fop, and discounted by all his family, until he shows his true mettle without changing a whit of his real character. I adore him.

The Lord Peter Wimsey mysteries by Dorothy L Sayer have a similarly unconventional hero. I recommend Strong Poison. It's the closest to come to a romance in the series.

Both writers are also very funny, which is essential to me in any romance novel.
