but don't pretend a dog's breed is more important than its upbringing because it is NOT. It's really really not.

You're lying to yourself if you don't think a dog's breed is part of what determines whether you can give it the upbringing it needs. The average person is just not equipped or prepared put in the kind of work it takes to raise/train/socialize the bully breeds--or any other high-drive dog.

ok but the average person probably isn't a very good dog owner in the first place.

most breeds don't necessarily require a ton of extra work, but rather understanding of how they operate, and of course being able to understand dogs in general so you can understand what's up with any individual dog.

maybe I should've said "the average person who wants a pit bull and thinks they love the breed." A pit isn't just too much dog for the average slob; it's too much dog for most people who want to have a pit. (Just like how a huge proportion of people who are wild to have guns are exactly the people who are too irresponsible and dangerous to be let near them.) As for what most breeds require, "most breeds" aren't bully breeds. I include understanding how your dog operates, and paying attention to its behavior and its individual psychology, as work--and it's work a lot of people can't be bothered to do.

I still disagree with the notion that what you call "bully breeds" require an extreme amount of work that's above and beyond what your average breed requires. I've met very aggressive dogs who you wouldn't consider bully breeds (labradors and English springer spaniels for example - one of the latter tried to attack one of my dogs out on a walk, and we've had the former growl and put on threatening displays). A dog is a huge responsibility and raising one wrong can be disastrous no matter what the breed.
