I just don't find reading fun. The amount of condescension from otherwise socially ostracized fandom "nerds" for not reading or having an orgasm from he sight of a library is incredible though.

It is.

As opposed to the social ostracism they have faced from pretty much everyone else for daring to like something other than reality TV?

Yeah, you are the oppressed one. Sure.

lol yeah, everyone who doesn't read is watching reality tv and michael bay movies and we go out clubbing all the time and party and drink a lot and do drugs, that's exactly what the non-reading life is like!!

I'm glad you totally understood the implied hypocrisy of these assholes, which is precisely why I included "socially ostracized nerds" in my description of them. because on the one hand they want to whine about how everyone is getting drunk and clubbing and making fun of their fandom hobbies and whatever else they think people their age do in place of reading, but will gladly turn around and ostracize everyone who doesn't "nerd" properly. and hey, if you didn't understand the implied hypocrisy, maybe you just need to read more. :/

Huh? I've never seen that. Some people might be interested in reality TV, but they generally shrug off people not being into it. And often say the stuff they consume isn't High Art.

I think that comes from defensiveness, honestly. That other anon who replied to you and mentioned TV is being a bit OTT, but there is some truth to what they've said. I really, really enjoy reading but most TV and movies don't hold my interest. I'll get asked if I've seen the latest episode of such-and-such so, and when I say, "I haven't. I don't really watch TV," they look at me like I have two heads and start loudly protesting (it gets worse if I mention I don't have cable. So, I try not to do that).

Since I have a "weird" interest, it was really tempting when I was younger to turn it into something it isn't. It's an insecurity thing. You feel like everyone's looking down on you, so you try to find a way to look down on them to make yourself feel better. It's silly. Hobbies and interests are just hobbies and interests. They don't make you inferior or superior to anyone else.

SA

Oops.

"such-and-such so" should be "such-and-such show."
