Have tried that, actually! Problem is the selection is limited and I DO get distracted a lot, because I'm not really used to just the audio medium. But yes, it is a solution, for popular books I really want to read. :)

The Harry Potter books especially are awesomely narrated. I listen to audiobooks in the car on my way to and from work.

The trick is to do something relatively monotonous while listening, like maybe walking or doing some craft like knitting or whatever you happen to enjoy, that doesn't take too much attention away from the listening.
Audiobooks can be pretty amazing, really. You can be walking/biking/driving somewhere, or cleaning up, or buying groceries, while enjoying a book simultaneously.

And in well-narrated cases, they may even feel better than the text-on-paper version.

I wish I could get into audiobooks. I tried listening to some while walking, and while sunbathing, and generally doing things you'd think would be conducive to listening to audio, but I just can't. Every time I would suddenly realize I had no idea what was going on. And it wasn't like I was uninterested. I enjoyed what I was listening to (there were Doctor Who audios, btw)! I just couldn't concentrate without the words in front of me.

When I was younger I used to listen to the audiobooks from the Redwall series, that were read by Brian Jacques, and I LOVED them, but I think it only worked because I'd read them already a million times each and I would sometimes follow along with the actual books anyway.

Sorry to hear that. I also have concentration issues sometimes, although not always. I have a very one-track mind and tend to fail at multitasking, so depending on the state of mind, I sometimes can't focus on audiobooks (or movies or tv, for that matter), either. I guess I just watch/listen to stuff whenever I'm in the "able to focus on it" state of mind. And what counts as a "monotonous background activity" that doesn't take attention away from listening to something, probably varies a lot between different people. Might also have something to do with how some people learn better through visual input, others through audio, others in some other way.

I think it's a bit of adapting that's needed, OP, so I wish you luck.
