Most of the fandoms I've written for are anime/manga, along with the occasional YA novel, and I'm probably older than the average fan in many of them. I don't know if being younger = being more insecure about their own sexual identity = projecting those insecurities onto others.

One of the most prolific authors I share a certain fandom with, has a profile with a massive wall-of-text paragraph about how much she loves yaoi, and how any "haters" are clearly terrible, horrible, no good, very bad people...

...then a couple of paragraphs further down said profile is the throw-away line: "ugh yuri is icky, what kind of sick pervs are into that lol" (paraphrased, but the original line is if anything worse).

That's just one example, but I've picked up a similar sentiment, albeit usually less directly stated, from quite a few people.

The mentality that writer harbors is baffling, both for its sheer lack of self-awareness and its blatant double standard. Speculating on why anyone feels that way is pointless, but that anyone does feel that way is so frustrating that you can't help but wonder why.
